As the component is designed as an individual research task producing extended individual study, centres are strongly encouraged to allow candidates some choice. We would usually advise that if a cohort are all analysing the same two texts for Task 2, a greater variety of task titles is necessary to create better opportunities for students to develop their independent skills of reading and research and avoid accidental plagiarism or malpractice.
Do bear in mind that the text and task approval service (see specification page 40) is mandatory when joining Cambridge OCR and therefore all text and task combinations must be approved by Cambridge OCR, which can help in managing student choice. However, Cambridge OCR recognises that programmes of teaching and learning in preparation for this qualification will vary from centre to centre and from teacher to teacher. We suggest that it is best to base your decision on logistics and resources within your centre to ensure that the coursework can be managed effectively in the time and to ensure that students can be best supported by teachers in their work.
It is therefore just as acceptable for teachers to nominate the coursework texts as it is for candidates to select the texts themselves; however, we would recommend some optionality.
