Content for GCSE mathematics cannot realistically be graded. What is a challenging topic for one student may well be an easy topic for another student, plus there are many other attributes of questions to be considered (such as the degree of mathematical reasoning or problem solving involved) in order for us to be able to reasonably attach grades to topics.
Our GCSE Specification sets out topics into one of three columns, 'Initial Learning...', 'Foundation tier…' and 'Higher tier…'.
- Topics in the 'Initial Learning...' column can be assessed in any GCSE (9-1) Mathematics question targeting any grade.
- Topics in the 'Foundation tier…' column will be introduced in the more challenging questions at Foundation tier targeting the upper grades of the Foundation tier.
- Topics in the 'Higher tier…' column will be introduced in the more challenging questions at Higher tier targeting the upper grades of the Higher tier.
