AS and A Level Further Mathematics A: Do I have options in AS/A Level Further Maths?

Yes, although they differ depending on which specification. Detailed information about the optional content is provided in the specifications on the respective qualification pages for spec A and spec B but a summary is provided here.

Further Mathematics A

All students study a fixed Pure Core and two options from: statistics; mechanics, discrete mathematics; and additional pure mathematics.

For A Level all students sit four exams:

2 x pure core, 1.5 hours each

2 x optional content, 1.5 hours each

For AS Level all students sit three exams:

1 x pure core, 70 minutes

2 x optional content, 70 minutes each

The options are the same as for the full A Level, and they cover approximately  of the content of the A Level option.

Students are able to enter for more optional papers than the minimum and we will select the best two to optimise their results.

Any student who resits their AS or A Level will need to retake all papers in the qualification.

Further Mathematics B

For A Level all students study a fixed Core Pure, and either:

3 x minor optional content

OR

1 x major optional content, plus 1 x minor optional content

The Core Pure is assessed in a single 2 hour 40 minute paper.

The options available are:

For AS Level all students study the Core Pure and two options. The options are mechanics a, mechanics b, statistics a, statistics b, numerical methods, modelling with algorithms.

They sit three exams:

1 x core pure, 75 minutes

2 x optional content, 75 minutes each

Mechanics minor has the same content as mechanics a, mechanics Major has the same content as mechanics a and mechanics b combined. This is also true for statistics.
The content of the AS level options in numerical methods and modelling with algorithms is the same as the content for the equivalent minor option at A Level. Whilst the specification content of the AS options and their equivalent A Level minor options are the same, the level of demand in the assessments will be appropriate to the qualification.

Students are able to enter for more optional papers than the minimum and we will select the best two to optimise their results.

Any student who resits their AS or A Level will need to retake all papers in the qualification.
