Can I give feedback on the work?
The specification advises teachers to “discuss work in progress towards summative assessment with students to make sure it’s being done in a planned and timely way. It also provides an opportunity to check the authenticity of the work. You must intervene if there’s a health and safety risk (and reflect this in your assessment if the student’s ability to operate safely and independently is part of the criteria)".
In the set assignment for unit F173, teachers are advised to review Task 1 to ensure it is safe for your students to carry out. Students must provide a step-by-step method, a full list of equipment and risk assessment. Teachers should pause and review these before allowing students to go ahead safely with the practical task. However, the feedback must still be general and cannot explicitly tell students how to improve their work.
The set assignment for F173 doesn’t tell me what the patients are suffering from. Why isn’t this information available?
Candidates are not required to discover the correct disease and match the patients to their samples correctly in order to gain marks. They should correctly use the symptoms to suggest an appropriate range of diseases, identify appropriate tests that can be carried out to assess the samples, and conclude which samples could belong to which patient using their observations.
Which practical techniques and test should my students include?
Your students should plan to test the samples provided using the techniques and tests they have learned based on the content in the specification. This will be dependent on the availability of equipment and materials in your centre. When they review the symptoms and research possible diseases, they should plan to use appropriate techniques to help them distinguish between the samples. This will vary depending on their research and predictions, but they should already have a good idea about what equipment they can choose from.
There should be at least one quantitative practical test/technique that allows students to carry out the necessary analysis in Task 3, and you should make this clear when you are practicing before the set assignment work begins.
