Edits to texts and extracts to fit the students and group sizes are acceptable. This can include taking different sections/lines and fitting them together to make one continuous extract or altering characters from a gender/role interpretation perspective, or contemporising a classic, or changing words to be less offensive.
As long as the playwright's intentions are adhered to and any interpretation that is applied is explained fully by the students in their concept pro-formas then edits and changes to the text to create an extract for performance is fine. Some plays have very clear intentions and less ability to adapt, some are able to be interpreted in all sorts of ways.
