If there is an issue identified with the marking of any criteria, this will be highlighted during your visit.
If there are several issues identified, there will be an opportunity for you to revisit your marking of these criteria for students outside of the sample before final results are issued for this moderation – but not to improve student work.
The moderator will then carry out some additional checks and will support you with this process:
- Additional moderation gives you the opportunity to revise your marking of criteria for students not in the sample before results are released, based on the feedback given at your visit.
- Your moderator will agree a date for additional moderation with you during the feedback session for the initial moderation – this will usually be approximately 10 days after your initial visit.
When is additional moderation is required?
When there are issues identified with the marking of a small number of assessment criteria, this will be highlighted at your visit and detailed in your feedback report.
If there are issues with the marking of several criteria:
- For cohorts of 6 or fewer the moderator will have seen the work for all students and will make the adjustments to the impacted assessment criteria on an individual student basis. Additional moderation will not be required.
- For cohorts of 7 or more the moderator will adjust the impacted assessment criteria for each of the six students in the initial sample. They will then ask you to review your marking for the impacted assessment criteria for the remaining students, this is when additional moderation is required.
Arranging additional moderation
Your moderator will agree a date for additional moderation with you. This will be approximately 10 working days after your initial moderation visit and take place via Microsoft Teams.
Additional moderation is not classed as a second visit – there is no fee for additional moderation.
Do we need to make another visit request via the moderation service for the additional moderation?
No. Once the date for additional moderation has been agreed, your moderator will add the additional moderation date to your existing visit record on the Moderation Service.
If the original visit was face-to-face, can we have face-to-face additional moderation?
No, additional moderation is always a virtual visit via Microsoft Teams.
Reviewing your marking
Do we need to revisit the marking of all criteria for the unit when additional moderation is required?
No. Only the criteria highlighted in your feedback and moderation report must be reviewed. At the additional moderation visit, your moderator will be reviewing these criteria only.
What if we do not find the same issues in the rest of the cohort, can we just resubmit the same total marks for those not in the initial sample?
Yes. Clicking the arrow next to the updated total marks box will copy your original total mark for the candidate.
What if we disagree with the moderator?
You must still review and resubmit the marks, even if they are the same marks as originally submitted. A service 3 review of moderation can be requested after the formal publication of the results for the window. For window 1 (February series), this is in April and for window 2 (June series) in August.
Students amending or improving work
Can students improve their work and submit it again before additional moderation takes place?
No. Additional moderation is only to give you the opportunity to revise your marking. Any updated or improved work must be submitted in a future window (series).
If a student is working on improving work for submission in a future moderation window, you must retain a copy of the work as originally submitted until the end of the post-results period for the current moderation window.
Preparing for the additional moderation visit: Updated total marks
Once you have reviewed the marking of the criteria highlighted at your visit, you must submit your updated total marks (total number of criteria achieved) for all candidates not in the original sample.
What if we do not find the same issues in the rest of the cohort, can we just resubmit the same total marks for those not in the initial sample?
Yes. Clicking the arrow next to the updated total marks box will copy your original total mark for the candidate.
Why are some of my candidates 'greyed out'?
The greyed-out candidates are the six students from your original sample and have been reviewed by your moderator. You only need to submit updated total marks for those not in the original sample.
Preparing for the additional moderation visit: Criteria marks
Once your updated total marks have been submitted, an additional sample will be generated. This will be for a further six students.
You will receive an email when the additional sample has been selected. This will be within an hour of submitting your updated total marks. You can then log into the Moderation Service to view the additional sample.
You must first submit the original criteria marks for the new sample before adding the amended marks:
- Submit your original criteria marks for the students in the additional sample

Why are some of the criteria highlighted?
These are the criteria your moderator has asked you to review.
If we do not find the same issues for a candidate, can we resubmit the same criteria marks?
Yes. The same mark for that criteria can be submitted.
Preparing for additional moderation: Upload the work for the students in the additional sample
When additional moderation is required, Cambridge OCR will re-open Submit for Assessment before the additional virtual visit to allow you to upload the additional sample:
- Upload the work for the students in the additional sample to Submit for Assessment
- Upload your updated recording documents for the cohort (unit recording sheets or your own alternative) to the component level area in Submit for Assessment.
What if the moderator does not agree with our revised marks?
If additional moderation takes place and there are still issues with an assessment criterion, you may be asked to make amendments to the mark for that criterion for all unsampled candidates who attempted it.
If you are advised to do this, in the Moderation Service, from your subject dashboard select 'Submit total marks' and then 'Update total marks' for the unit you have been asked to amend.
Enter the revised mark in the 'updated total number of criteria achieved' box and click 'Update marks'. This completes the process – you do not need to submit updated criteria level marks.
Feedback and results
After additional moderation is complete, your original feedback report will be updated to include feedback from the additional visit.
The updated report will contain all original feedback and a new section for the additional visit.
