Where your students were partway through their Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals course in 2020/21 and would have been taking assessments between 1 August 2020 and 31 August 2021, they can be given unit level teacher assessed grades (TAGs) for the units they would have done.
How we plan to calculate the overall grade when some units are teacher assessed grades can be found below:
Cambridge Nationals
The unit teacher assessed grade you submitted this autumn is a single grade for each unit. We did not ask you to supply marks.
When we awarded the units, for grades between ‘pass at level 1’ (p1) and ‘distinction at level 2’ (d2) we assigned a uniform mark (UMS) that is half the distance between the grade you have given and the grade above. For distinction* at level 2 (*2) we gave a mark that is half the distance between *2 and the maximum UMS.
We chose this approach for TAGs because it was the fairest option for all students, because the TAGs will be combined with live assessments to form the overall grade.
GLH = Guided Learning Hours
Example of a 30 GLH unit
- You submit a teacher assessed grade of ‘merit at level 2’ (m2) for a 30 GLH unit.
- The next grade up is ‘distinction at level 2’ (d2)
- We will assign a UMS of 45 to this unit, the mid-point between m2 (42) and d2 (48).
Example of a 60 GLH unit
- You submit a teacher assessed grade of ‘pass at level 2’ (p2) for a 60 GLH unit.
- The next grade up is ‘merit at level 2’ (m2)
- We will assign a UMS of 78 to this unit, the mid-point between p2 (72) and m2 (84).
Unclassified (U)
Unclassified is given where there is evidence to submit a teacher assessed grade, however, the evidence does not reach the standard of a pass at level 1. Where no evidence is available, an X should be submitted on the Grade Submission System (if you have not withdrawn the unit).
The unclassified range (from 0 to the mark below P1) is wider than other grades. Therefore, so students are not disadvantaged, we plan to use the same width as the difference between p1 and m1 to assign the UMS.
- For a 30 GLH unit, there are 6 marks between p1 and m1, therefore a U will be assigned 15 marks (18-3).
- For a 60 GLH unit, there are 12 marks between p1 and m1, therefore a U will be assigned 30 marks (36-6).
The UMS from the unit(s) will then be combined with the UMS from any other units taken in the standard way.
Example for a four-unit Certificate:
- Unit 1 (30 GLH): Unit TAG at p2 = 39 UMS, the mid-point between p2 and m2.
- Unit 2 (30 GLH): Unit TAG at m2 = 45 UMS, the mid-point between m2 and d2.
- Unit 3 (30 GLH): Taken normally, student result was 35 UMS (d1)
- Unit 4 (30 GLH): Taken normally, student result was 49 UMS (d2)
We will combine all the UMS for a total of 168 - Merit at Level 2.

The unit teacher assessed grades you submitted this autumn were assigned points based on the grade submitted and the guided learning (GLH) of the units as normal. Details of how many points are assigned at each grade can be found in the Centre Handbook.
The overall grade will be calculated in the standard way, combining the points from the units you have given a TAG for and any units taken in the normal way.

Reduction in the number of moderated unit assessments taken
The information above includes examples of a scenario where a mixture of unit TAGs and units assessed normally are being used towards the overall qualification. All units have a result either through a TAG or taken normally.
For Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals when an assessment has not been taken (due to the permitted reduction in the number of assessments taken), we will produce an assessed grade for the unit not being assessed. Further details of this can be found here.
We will then assign UMS/points in the same way as for unit TAGs as detailed above. More information can be found in our article How the overall grade will be determined for Cambridge Nationals and Technicals in 2021/22 and beyond.
