What happens if a student is unable to sit a Cambridge National or Cambridge Technical exam in the January series?
If a student misses an exam in the January 2022 series due to self-isolating, illness, injury or bereavement, you may be able to apply for a ‘special consideration absence’ for them. This depends on their eligibility and when they are planning on certificating (completing) the qualification.
To be eligible for a special consideration absence in January 2022, the following must apply:
- The student must have completed sufficient other units to be certificating or in a position to certificate in January 2022 or June 2022.
- The other units already completed must account for a minimum of 25% of the overall assessment towards certification. The 25% can include unit teacher assessed grades (TAGs).
- You must not withdraw the unit entry; students should instead be marked as absent.
Certification series | Arrangements available | Actions required |
January 2022 |
If the student is eligible, OCR can determine a grade for the unit based on their performance in other units. This is the standard arrangement. |
Apply for special consideration, indicating that your student is certificating in January 2022. Do not withdraw the January entry. |
June 2022 |
If the student is eligible, OCR can determine a grade for the unit based on their performance in other units. This is an exceptional arrangement taking into account the impact of Covid disruption. |
Apply for special consideration, indicating that your student is certificating in June 2022. Do not withdraw the January entry. |
June 2022 |
If the student is not eligible for a special consideration absence in the January series or would prefer to carry out the assessment, they can take the exam in the June 2022 series.
|
Make unit entries for the June 2022 series by the entry deadlines. Cambridge Nationals: Withdraw the January 2022 unit entry. You will receive a refund for the entry fee. Cambridge Technicals: You do not need to withdraw the entry. You will receive a refund for any resit entry fees. |
After June 2022 |
Your student is not eligible for special consideration and should plan to take the assessment in a later series. |
Cambridge Nationals: Withdraw the January 2022 unit entry. You will receive a refund for that entry. Cambridge Technicals: You do not need to withdraw the entry. You will receive a refund for any resit entry fees. |
How do we apply for a special consideration absence?
To apply for a special consideration absence, you can do this by using the Special consideration online portal, which is accessed via Interchange.
Please contact us if you have any concerns or complex cases that you need more detailed guidance on.
Does an absence count as an attempt?
An absence does not count as an attempt for an examination/unit in Cambridge Nationals or Cambridge Technicals.
In addition, for Cambridge Technicals, as an exceptional arrangement, if your candidate is absent from the January 2022 series for their first attempt and does not receive an assessed grade, we will also not charge for their second attempt.
Can we apply for a special consideration absence for January 2022 and have the students take the examination in June 2022?
This exceptional arrangement is designed for those students who would find it difficult to take the exam in the summer. Therefore, you should only apply for special consideration absence if students aren't planning on taking the exam in the June series. If students aren't sure, you can apply now and then we will exclude anybody who does take the examination in June.
When will my student get the grade for their unit?
We will calculate the grade for January when your student completes their qualification in June 2022. We will not calculate a grade if your student takes the exam in June.
