Which OCR vocational qualifications (VTQs) does the Ofqual advice on 09 April apply to?
Ofqual’s advice published on 9 April applies to all Cambridge Nationals and all Cambridge Technicals.
The advice also includes other vocational qualifications such as our Functional Skills (FS), although the process for awarding grades for Functional Skills may differ slightly from Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals.
Guidance on the process for Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals is now available:
We are currently working with the other awarding bodies on the arrangements for Functional Skills, please see our latest update here.
Which learners does this apply to?
This applies to learners who would have expected to have completed their assessments and/or certificates between March and the end of July 2020. It could include some learners being assessed on modules in the first year of a two-year course.
What about the Certificate of Professional Competence for Transport Managers in Road Haulage and in Passenger Transport (CPC) and other vocational quals not mentioned here which are not used for progression?
We know that you need clarity. We’re working hard with the other boards and with Ofqual so we can share arrangements for our vocational qualifications, including CPC.
What about Core Maths, FSMQ and Entry Level (GQ)?
The process for awarding grades will be the same as the process for GCSEs, AS/A Levels and EPQs.
How do I calculate a grade for Cambridge National/Cambridge Technical?
This will be partly based on your judgement of what grade each learner would most likely have achieved if they had been able to complete their assessments this summer.
This is likely to be combined with a range of other evidence held by the school, college or training provider and/or by the awarding organisation.
What type of evidence do I use?
You will need to use a range of evidence held by your school, college or training provider. The evidence you use will depend on the structure of your qualification.
Do I need to get my Cambridge National and Cambridge Technical learners to complete unfinished NEA/coursework now?
No. Please do not ask them to complete NEA/coursework.
What evidence will OCR use?
We will use any centre assessed judgement, combined with other relevant information, to determine the most appropriate calculated result.
Do I need to give you a rank order too?
There will be instances where a school or college will also be asked to provide a rank order of learners (as with GCSEs, AS and A Levels).
This is confirmed for Cambridge Nationals and Cambridge Technicals:
How do I do this?
A rank order is a list of the learners from the highest attaining / most secure to second highest attaining / second most secure and so on, at each grade. For Cambridge Technicals this is for each unit, for Cambridge Nationals we require grades and ranks at qualification level only.
What does OCR do with the information I send?
We are still discussing the process for generating calculated results with Ofqual.
Can my learners appeal their results?
Ofqual is considering whether additional guidance on appeals is needed to take account of the current exceptional circumstances.
If my learners don’t like their results, can they complete an assessment afterwards?
Learners who do not feel their result reflects their ability will be able to complete an assessment at the next available opportunity
