When candidates set out to satisfy AO2 they often ‘stop the essay’ to analyse a passage of language. In these Section 2 answers, we want candidates to keep two or more texts in play, rather than slowing down or stopping the argument to demonstrate AO2 in a single text. If candidates compare the texts by looking in detail at writers’ use of metaphor, for example (which might be thought of as AO2), this can be rewarded under AO4 for connections between texts and/or AO1 for showing literary understanding.
