Where the text includes a long poem, such as ‘The Waste Land’, detailed reference to this poem will serve instead of four or five shorter poems, but there should still be some reference to others in the collection – no poem should be studied in isolation.
For Task 1, the focus is on approximately up to 45 lines of poetry, however, candidates should have studied a collection and therefore be able to demonstrate that they can contextualise this particular poem/section of a poem within the poet’s body of work as a whole. This usually requires some pertinent references to other poems in the collection to show that the student understands the poet's body of work and the themes/stylistic concerns coming out of that body of work.
