AS and A Level PE: What do I do if a student is injured?

We strongly recommend that as early as possible in the course you do an initial assessment of your candidates in one or more of their chosen sports. Then if they do sustain an injury you will have a starting point for talking to us about what we can do for the candidate. The AS GCE and Advanced GCE are stand-alone qualifications and NEA must be assessed separately.

The Performance analysis task

If you have a candidate who you think may struggle with this, for example is partially sighted or has speech issues please contact the subject Specialist pe@ocr.org.uk for further advice.

The practical activities

There are three situations you may find yourself in with an injured/disabled candidate. Please remember that the practical activity may be completed as either player/performer or coach.  An alternative activity/role should first be considered

1. The candidate is disabled and cannot access any activities on the DfE list and therefore cannot participate

There are some disability sports on the DfE list, please look at these first before proceeding. If these are not appropriate for you, then please refer to section 1e of the guide to NEA. This section details how to apply for new disability sports, or adaptations to existing approved sports. For candidates with a long term disability the centre should apply via the special activity submissions process to adapt or request activities that meet their needs and not apply for special consideration. If your candidate chooses to not apply for adaptations or new sports they can access, then it is not possible to award them marks for this part of the assessment.

2. The candidate wishes to take Physical Education but is not going to be able to perform practically or as a coach for the duration of the course, as they are long term sick/injured

In this situation it is not appropriate to apply for special consideration, the candidate cannot be awarded any marks for the practical part of the course. They can still access the performance analysis section of the NEA component but we cannot provide additional marks or special consideration to make up for the lack of the practical performance.

3. The candidate becomes injured AFTER you have assessed them in all of their sports AND they cannot attend moderation

Please submit your marks as normal to OCR, the moderator will ask to see medical evidence to show that the candidate is injured and you will be asked to provide a suitable replacement to them for the day of moderation. It is not necessary to apply for special consideration.
