Component 01 (Personal investigation) has two distinct elements:
- A practical portfolio with supporting contextual research in response to a set theme. The portfolio may be presented in a format appropriate to the specialism and area of study chosen.
- A related study using words and illustrations demonstrating the context in which their portfolio exists, exploring the relevant genre, subject matter, movement or historical framework of the selected theme.
The related study enables learners to demonstrate their ability to communicate knowledge and understanding of art movements, genres, practitioners through a written and where appropriate illustrated component.
This written study should be related through context to the learners chosen practical portfolio, it should be guided to a minimum of 1000 words.
There isn't a specific requirement for a certain number of artists to be discussed but students should ensure that the breadth of the topic they are investigating is appropriately covered by a range of artists/contextualisation.
There should be ample opportunity to meaningfully compare different approaches to the subject matter.
