We strongly recommend that as early as possible in the course you do an initial assessment of your candidates in one or more of their chosen sports. Then if they do sustain an injury you will have a starting point for talking to us about what we can do for the candidate.
The Analysing and Evaluating Performance Analysis task
Where a candidate has agreed access arrangements, these should be made available for the task. However, extra time or the full amount of the candidate’s extra time allowance may not necessarily be appropriate. If you have a candidate who you think may struggle with this (for example they are partially sighted) then contact the OCR Special requirements on srteam@ocr.org.uk for further advice.
The practical activities
At GCSE learners can only be assessed in the role of player/performer, so an alternative approved sport should be considered. There are 3 situations you may find yourself in with an injured /disabled candidate.
- The candidate wishes to take Physical Education but is not going to be able to perform practically for the duration of the course, as they are long term sick/injured.
In this situation it is not appropriate to apply for special consideration, the candidate cannot be awarded any marks for the practical part of the course. They can still access the performance analysis section of the NEA component, but we cannot provide additional marks or special consideration to make up for the lack of any practical performance.
- The candidate becomes injured during their GCSE course AND 1 or more sport(s) and the Analysing and Evaluating Performance have already been assessed.
You should make an online application for special consideration as a Shortfall in work. The mark for that one sport (or more if you have completed them) should be entered together with a rationale as to why that mark has been awarded and is the right mark. Providing that your application and rationale are accepted we will be able to enhance the candidate’s raw mark to take account of the missing practical activity/activities.
- The candidate becomes injured AFTER you have assessed them in all of their sports AND they cannot attend moderation.
Please submit your marks as normal to OCR, the moderator will ask to see medical evidence to show that the candidate is injured, and you will be asked to provide a suitable replacement to them for the day of moderation. It is not necessary to apply for special consideration.
